DEERFIELD, N.Y. – Deerfield Elementary School students were surprised with a real-life, 6-foot 4-inch Elf on the Shelf Friday morning.

First-grade teacher Mr. German is reading the book “The Elf on the Shelf” with his class, and decided to dress up as the main character and surprise the students on the roof of the school building.

"The students all have the Elf on the Shelf to make sure they have the best behavior and spread kindness in their classrooms, and they've been all excited about it this year, so we thought our first-grade teacher Mr. German would get up on the roof and be everybody's Elf on the Shelf and greet the students this morning,” said Principal Kelli McGowan.

The popular children’s tradition started about 15 years ago, where parents put the elves in various places to keep an eye on children for Santa to make sure they’re being good before Christmas.
