HERKIMER, N.Y. – The Herkimer County Office for the Aging honored three local seniors Wednesday during its annual senior awards ceremony.
The office wasn’t able to hold a ceremony last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, so two recipients from last year and one from 2021 were honored Wednesday.
Each year, nominations are submitted to the office for Senior Citizen of the Year and Outstanding Contribution. The advisory council reviews the nominees and chooses the winners.
Gail Domion, of Ilion, won Senior Citizen of the Year for 2020 and Ralph Dow, of Newport, was honored for Outstanding Contribution to the community.
Domion prepares traditional Sunday dinners for the residents at Prindle Apartments in Ilion, cooking three-course meals for 25 to 30 people each week. She also volunteers for the Catholic Charities RSVP and RIDE programs, among other volunteer efforts.
Dow is a Navy veteran who has been a member of the Knights of Columbus and local VFW. He also volunteers with the RSVP program and worked as the Kuyahoora food pantry coordinator.
Doug Capraro, of West Winfield received the 2021 Senior Citizen of the Year award.
He has been a volunteer for the RSVP and RIDE programs, donating much of his time to bringing seniors to medical appointments. People who use the service often request Capraro specifically to pick them up.
Capraro is also an Army veteran and member of the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
