Hochul issues state of emergency in response to new COVID-19 variant

Governor Kathy Hochul issued a state of emergency on Friday due to the new COVID-19 omicron variant.

The emergency allows the New York Department of Health to limit non-essential and non-urgent procedures where a hospital has less than 10% staffed bed capacity. The order will allow New York hospitals to increase their capacity for emergencies.

The emergency order will take place on Dec. 3 and will be effective until Jan. 15
