New Hartford police arrest 2 teens following rash of vehicle thefts

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – New Hartford police have arrested two teens following a rash of vehicle thefts early last week.

On Aug. 30, New Hartford police said eight unlocked vehicles with keys inside were stolen from residences near Merritt Place, Overbrook Crescent and Burrstone Road. All of the stolen vehicles were recovered, but most were damaged by the suspects.

The two male suspects, ages 14 and 15, are both from Utica. Due to their ages, police will not be releasing their names.

Both of the teens were allegedly involved in the vehicle thefts and theft of other property during these incidents.

Police say one of the teens went into a garage and stole items from the vehicle inside. He was charged with third-degree burglary and fourth-degree grand larceny.

The other suspect is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny in relation to another stolen vehicle.

Both were processed and released to into the care of their parents. They will appear in court at a later date to answer the charges.

Police did not say if they expect more arrests related to the vehicle thefts.
