UTICA, N.Y. – The 2021 Boilermaker Road Race will take place in October, instead of its normal second Sunday in July.

The 44th Boilermaker has been scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 10, and will follow whatever health and safety guidelines are required at that time for an event of that size.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 races were held virtually, with participants running the 5K or 15K on their own and reporting results to race officials.

Without knowing how the pandemic may affect next year’s race, organizers decided to move the event to the fall as a precaution.

“After such a horrific 2020, our goal for 2021 has been focused on being in a position to safely host an in-person Boilermaker. While the scientific community has worked to develop vaccines in record time for which we should all be grateful, given the deadly resurgence of COVID-19 of late, the unknowns related to the widespread availability of the vaccines, and our commitment to the health, safety and well-being of our community, we were not comfortable with the probability that we would be allowed to proceed with our traditional date in July,” said Mark Donovan, Boilermaker president.

Details on registration dates, race capacities and the resumption of other traditional Boilermaker Weekend events are still up in the air until officials have a better idea about the regulations that will have to be followed.

“Rather than put our participants, volunteers, vendors, and our community through potentially changing scenarios which we all just experienced this year, we wanted to not only give our community something to look forward to, but to also provide as much certainty in these uncertain times as feasible while giving the Boilermaker the best possible opportunity to be held in-person and safely in 2021,” said Donovan.

Participants are advised to look for emails and check the Boilermaker social media accounts and website regularly for updates.
