UTICA - The Boilermaker Road Race has confirmed that the Boilermaker Walk is no more.

Organizers cite dwindling participation and logistical issues such as parking as reasons for cancelling the event. 1,388 people took part in the first walk in 2001, but by 2016 that number had declined to just 376.

“This was a difficult decision to make but one that we have been putting a lot of thought into over the past few years,” said Boilermaker Race Director Jim Stasaitis. “We understand that many people looked forward to the walk but we have decided that there are better ways to promote walking in this community. We are currently in the planning stages for an alternative walking event in May and hopefully we can share more information about that soon.”

Boilermaker officials say there are no plans to bring the walk back in the future.

The walk was started by then-race director Bob Ingalls, and was originally sponsored by WKTV. It was held on the grounds of the Masonic Care Community.

The walk expanded from 8K to 3 miles in 2008, and moved to the Utica campus of Mohawk Valley Community College in 2017.
