As we move closer to a new year, we look back at the local stories that caught our attention in 2018.

The campaign trail was busy this year with one race in particular that brought President Donald Trump to town. The 2018 midterm election included a heated race for the 22nd Congressional District seat between Anthony Brindisi (D) and Claudia Tenney (R).
Brindisi defeated Tenney by 4,473 votes.

President Trump made a visit to Utica and was the first president to visit the city since Harry Truman in the mid 1952. President Trump's family even stopped in the area to rally for the incumbent congressional candidate Claudia Tenney.

The downtown hospital saw both progression from supporters and pushback from people against the project. Ninety year old, former common councilman Lou Critelli started a petition to challenge the term limits law in Utica. After battling it out with the common council and the state supreme court, the law that extends term limits for elected officials was ultimately kept in place.

Danfoss Silcon Power opened in Oneida County, and the Tractor Supply Company began construction in Herkimer County, which created over 300 warehouse jobs in the community.

Former Utica Fire Chief Russell Brooks retired from the Utica Fire Department after 43 years of service. Since his departure, the fire department has been in the process of finding a replacement.

Olympic bronze medalist Erin Hamlin retired this year after competing in her fourth Winter Olympics.

The city of Utica got a new professional indoor soccer team, the Utica City Football Club, and the Boilermaker got a new president, Mark Donovan.

Kaitlyn Conley started her year with a conviction of killing Dr. Mary Yoder. Tasheonia Hills and Fahrudin Omerovic both ended their year with convictons. Hills for murdering her mother. Omerovic for making terroristic threats, causing a lockdown on Utica College's campus. Kevin Perry of Otsego County, was sentenced to 25 years to life for killing his parents.

Whitesboro police officer Kevin Crossley was killed in an accident in the village of Whitesboro. Friends, family, and the commuinty came out to show support for the fallen officer at his funeral at the Adirondack Bank Center.

A Utica mother, Ledrika Ford, was charged with child endangerment after a video went viral showing her baby crawling in the roadway of Bleecker Street.

An explosion on Main Street in Little Falls destroyed three homes and displaced several families. The explosion was determined to be caused by a natural gas leak.

A limo crash that killed 20 people in Schoharie led to the arrest of the limo company's owner, Nauman Hussain. The crash garnered national attention and left several families searching for answers.

The weather had its ups and downs with extreme cold temperatures causing severe ice jams in many local creeks. Those ice jams led to a number of problems for local residents. Frigid cold temperatures and snow led to the Heart Run Expo closing early. This year's expo saw fewer visitors than normal.

After a long application process, the Utica Zoo accomplished their goal of reciving an accredidation from the Association of National Zoos and Aquariums. The zoo went through the process of making upgrades to things that were found in their inspection.

That was your year in review! NewsChannel 2 will be here to bring you more big stories from the Mohawk Valley in the new year.
