UTICA -- Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri and the Utica Harbor Point Development Corporation made an announcement, Tuesday, to update the public on the next phase of the Utica Harbor Point project.

The Utica Harbor Point Corporation acquired the first two parcels of land from the Canal Corporation. The area of land is about 17-acres and was previously the site used by the Canal Corporation, where sediment from the cleaning of the canal is collected.

The master plan for the harbor point calls for creating a mixed-use destination attraction, that will include residential upper floor apartments, with retail and commercial uses.

Mayor Palmieri is calling this next phase of the project a milestone.

"This is a unique development in attraction for the Northeast,” Palmieri said. “If you look at the harbor … If you look at the proximity, where it's at, and all the development that's going in the city of Utica, this is going to transform this region into, not only a tourist attraction, but the livability."

Along with acquiring the parcel of land, the City of Utica, The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the New York Empire State Development, and the UHPDC have entered an agreement that will preserve two historical buildings along the harbor. The two buildings will be reused as local food, beverage, arts businesses, and marina support services.
Developers say the request for proposals, for the development of the harbor, are due on September 28th.
