HERKIMER, N.Y. -- No tax increase and a figure of $101 million are what's in store moving forward for the residents of Herkimer County come 2019.

The 2019 budget was passed by county legislators Wednesday night after holding a public hearing.

Many things were discussed in the meeting but the big ticket item is the new Herkimer County correctional facility that was approved in November.

The jail will cost around $20 million, and contractors are already on site getting ready to start construction.

While many legislatures are in favor of the jail, some are still opposed to the project for specific reasons.
“Mainly the cost and the location, you know a lot of the legislators didn't want the location and some just thought that we could be able to board out, be cheaper but we have proved that not to be the case,” said Herkimer County Vice Chairman Vincent Bono.

This project is expected to be a 20-month process. If all goes well, the board hopes to lower taxes in the future.
