WHITESBORO, N.Y. - Local women spent their Galentine's Day knitting at Love & Stitches in Whitesboro.
Galentine's Day is an unofficial holiday that was started in a 2010 episode of NBC's sitcom, Parks and Recreation. Galentine's Day is about embracing friendships, women supporting women, and carving out some quality time for one other.
Five women enjoyed quality time together Thursday night at Love & Stitches, a yarn store in Whitesboro.
"Thursday is our regular knit night every week," Lauren Venettozzi, the owner of Love & Stitches said. "We usually have about five or six women come in and we just hangout and knit."
This Thursday was special for Venettozzi and the women she knits with.
"This week was special because it happened to fall on Galentine's Day," Venettozzi said. "I like Parks and Rec so that was fun because we're all these ladies coming in, helping each other with a craft we that love."
The women that showed up for Galentine's Day say it's a great way to relax.
"It's very relaxed, everybody’s been super welcoming and super warm," Hannah Jacobs, a knitter and crocheter said.
Jacobs is from Canada. She moved to Boonville in August, and she tries to make it to Love & Stitch for every knit night.
“The first thing, when I move to a new city, is to look up the local yarn store because moving somewhere new, I didn’t really know anybody," Jacobs said. “I looked up Love & Stitches, saw they had a knit night and decided to come and join and it's been a really welcoming community.”
Jacobs said she made sure she didn't miss Galentine's Day with the women who have made her apart of their community.
"I think it's a great opportunity to thank the women in your life and recognize the support this wonderful community has for each other," Jacobs said.
It's not just about the handmade sweaters or scarfs these women love about this craft, it's also the comradery and shared love for the same activity.
"I get to meet all sorts of knitters and crocheters around," Venettozzi said. "It's just awesome to share the love."
Venettozzi has owned Love & Stitches for about two and a half years. She says she's happy to do what she loves, even with another full-time job.
“I've taught so many people to be knitters and crocheters and it spans from young kids that are like 10 years old to women who are 70, 80, 90, its crazy," Venettozzi said. "I have a full-time job, all the other ladies that come in here have full-time jobs, so the few hours we have here for our knit night is golden.”
Venettozzi and Jacobs say knitting and crocheting are both great ways to unwind and relax.
“It’s a great getaway, great break for your brain to just be very meditative to go through the stitches, just really getting to relax and then in all the relaxing you’re still productive because you can come out with something really pretty," Venetozzi said.
