ILION, N.Y. - The Village of Ilion will start accepting bids from construction companies for "phase one" of a project designed to tackle the ongoing water problems.

The project will run a pipeline from a well site through and up the water treatment plant which is just south of the village.

"This is a big step, no matter how we proceed in the future, it's going to be something we need to do," Ilion Mayor Brian Lamaca said. "Getting the water running in the same direction instead of fighting against one another in the lines is going to reduce turbitity and reduce discoloration as well as the amount of pressure in the lines that is actually causing a lot of the water main breaks we've had over the last year."

An engineering firm is collecting bids for the part of the project that could cost approximately $3.5 million.

The mayor says the village has received grants and zero interest loans to cover it.

"I really wish it happened overnight, we are dealing with a lot of different agencies, we are dealing with government, both state and federal," Mayor Lamica said. "Things move a little slower at that level than we would like however, I can't complain about our state officials, they were great with us right off the bat."

Phase one of the project is expected to start next month.

Ilion officials are meeting with state officials in early September and are planning for a public meeting in mid-September.

The step after that is still a year ot two out.

"We are looking at early this fall, probably September," Mayor Lamica said. "There are such things such as easements, financing things like that that got us behind the game a little bit from where we really wanted to be."
