WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. - Mt. Markham school officials say they will address bullying by hiring a resource officer to be on campus on a regular basis.

Tuesday night, a school board meeting was held to address concerns of bullying and discuss a plan to have a resource officer present at Mt. Markham schools.

Herkimer County approved the hiring of a sheriff to be on Mt. Markham campus to bring increased safety to not only the students but the staff as well.

News Channel 2 spoke with one parent who said she has been dealing with her son being bullied on multiple occasions and a resource officer would monitor the halls and hopefully solve some of these problems.

"As parents, we can't see video, we're not able to see what goes on in the hallway, we can't get certain documentation, we just have to take staffs word that they're doing their best so the only thing we can do is get a resource officer to be there and be an extra set of eyes," said Samantha Fitch, a parent.

The superintendent agrees that this would help students feel safe at school and they will be able to focus on learning.

"I think that the regular presence of a school resource officer and law enforcement on our campus will bring an added element of safety to our campus that is very important," said Superintendent Paul Berry.

All seven board members at the meeting on voted in favor of hiring a resource officer. Tomorrow the school will be in touch with the Herkimer County's Sheriffs Office to get an officer on campus as soon as possible.
