CLINTON – A student at Hamilton College found a snake in her dorm room, behind her refrigerator, Tuesday morning.

Francis Coots, Director of Campus Safety, says the student called, in a panic, asking for help.

"When you have something like that, it's unusual and it tends to upset people. Especially when you find them in a place where you're not expecting it," Coots said.

Staff at Hamilton College say the snake belonged to a student living in Bundy East Residence hall and was being housed in a tote bag, but the bag wasn't enough to keep the snake contained. Wildlife specialists say the snake likely escaped underneath the dorm room door.

"He's a big snake. He's strong all he did was push the lid up," said Judy Cusworth, Director of Woodhaven Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. "If they can get their head through, they can get their body through."

Cusworth says the snake is nearly five-feet long, and is likely a Boa Constrictor. Buzz about the snake quickly spread around campus and students reacted to the news.

"I don't like snakes at all,” student Gareth Coalson said. “It was kind of surprising. I think it's one of those things that you should be alerted of, if someone had a snake in a room, so people know and can keep control of it."

Because snakes are not allowed on campus, Coots says the owner of the snake could face consequences.

"It's a little early to say whether there's going to be any type of disciplinary action, but since he did violate the policy of the campus, not allowing animals on campus, he would be in violation of that," Coots said.

For now, the snake will stay at Woodhaven Wildlife Center until the owner finds it a new home.
