The holiday season impacts local business owning-moms

The holidays can be a crucial time for small business owners.

NEW HARTFORD -- The holidays can be a crucial time for small business owners.

In a recent survey by Vistaprint, a company that helps small businesses market themselves, 500 moms described the pressure of running a business during the holidays.

For moms who own a business, creating a work-life balance can be challenging. Especially when trying to decide between providing for your family and spending time with family.

Heather Beebe is a mother of three. She also owns Unstoppable You, a holistic health and wellness business in New Hartford. She says running the business sometimes weighs heavy on her family life.

"Kids grow fast and there's guilt sometimes if you miss something really important,” Beebe said. “When the other moms are out there at every game, or the dads are out there at every game, sometimes you feel a little bit guilty when you're that one and you missed it."

Beebe says a key to running a business is to make time for family.

"This is the sacrifice in working and I think a lot of working moms feel that and they shouldn't. If you really feel like you're not with your children enough, then make it happen. But don't settle feeling guilty because other people think you're doing the wrong thing."

According to Vistaprint’s survey, 47 percent of moms say they work longer hours than normal during the holiday season.

"It's Christmas, Christmas eve. People don't want to spend the time away from family to do these things in the gym, or in the office,” said Beebe. “So, I’ll book whenever I can get them in. It does make my day a bit longer on the days that I’m here working rather than spreading it out over the week."

Beebe’s advice to moms who do it all is to build a solid support team.

"It takes a village it really does, and don't feel bad. You don't have to do everything. We're incapable of doing everything. That’s not what we're meant to do so, do what you can do and accept the support from others for what you can't."
