HERKIMER, N.Y. – Ten inmates at Herkimer County Correctional Facility are facing felony riot charges after barricading doors so officers couldn’t get in, and creating safety hazards by pouring soap on floors and covering themselves in excrement.
According to Herkimer County Sheriff’s Office, all of the inmates carried out a coordinated effort to prevent officers from accessing two blocks within the jail on Dec. 23, 2020.
The 10 men refused to comply with staff and violated several facility rules during the disturbance.
The sheriff’s office says the inmates poured soap and water on the floor so the correctional officers would slip and fall as they tried to get into the barricaded area. They also wiped excrement on their bodies to expose officers and hinder them from apprehending them.
When deputies arrived to the jail, they were able to get into both blocks and detain all those involved.
One correctional officer sustained minor injuries to his legs during the incident.
