HUNTER, N.Y. (AP) - Police say an 11-year-old boy from Westchester County has died after falling about 300 feet from an icy trail in the Catskill Mountains.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office says Mattias Edstrom of Chappaqua was hiking with his father, three other adults and two teenagers when the accident happened late Saturday afternoon.
Mattias is the son of New Castle Town Supervisor Ivy Pool and was a sixth-grader at Robert E. Bell Middle School in Chappaqua.
Greene County Sheriff Peter Kusminsky said the group had been ice-climbing and the boy was wearing proper gear including a helmet. Forest rangers recovered the body Sunday.
