SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. – A 14-year-old is facing felony charges in connection with multiple armed robberies reported in Oneida County.
According to New York State Police, a juvenile had posted to Snapchat about selling an online Fortnite account. Someone responded to the ad, and the two agreed to meet at the Pine Have Trailer Park in Sylvan Beach at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday to make the exchange.
Police say someone with a gun, later identified as the teen suspect, demanded all of the victim’s belongings. The victim gave the suspect an iPhone, and then the suspect ran away.
Then, around 3:30 a.m., the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office was called to another armed robbery in the town of Lee, where a second cell phone was stolen from a juvenile victim.
Police say a similar incident was also reported in Rome on Sept. 5.
State police worked with the sheriff’s office and Rome police to identify the teen suspect, who was arrested on Sept. 8 and taken to the Rome Police Department.
Police say the suspect implicated himself in several robberies and an assault in the Rome area.
The suspect was charged with three counts of robbery with a firearm displayed, and was virtually arraigned. The teen was then remanded to a juvenile detention facility in Erie County.
Due to the ages of the suspect and victims, their names will not be released.
