OLD FORGE, N.Y. – Two men died after crashing nearly head-on while riding their snowmobiles in Old Forge Thursday night.
According to Town of Webb Police Chief Ron Johnston, the accident happened around 10:45 p.m. near Enchanted Forrest Water Safari, at the connector trail between North Street’s Trail 1 and State Route 28.
Johnston says 39-year-old Jason Sasso, of Saugerties, was traveling south toward State Route 28 at the same time 42-year-old Douglas Wilbert, of Macedon, was heading north toward the Trail 5 entrance when the two crashed.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Johnston, the two suffered blunt force trauma after the skis from both snowmobiles went up and over the sleds during the collision, striking both of them.
The part of the trail where the crash happened is covered with small bumps, and was rough at the time of the incident.
Johnston says alcohol, imprudent speed, low visibility and failure to keep right all played a part in the accident.
