NEW HARTFORD – A Utica man is facing several felony charges after he allegedly stole nearly $3,000 worth of cigarettes from Walmart, according to the New Hartford Police Department.
On September 16, New Hartford police responded to the Walmart in Consumer Square for a report of a larceny. Police say after speaking with Walmart staff, they learned that an unknown man – later identified as 30-year-old Alen Pajazetovic – entered the store and he was acting suspicious.
Pajazetovic allegedly then entered the cigarette island in the store, which is blocked off to customers, and he took a box containing 30 cartons of cigarettes. As Pajazetovic was leaving the cigarette island with the box, he was approached by a female employee who confronted him about the theft.
A struggle then ensued between Pajazetovic and the employee, and Pajazetovic was able to overpower her and keep the box. The employee then fell to the floor and Pajazetovic fled from the store with the box of cigarettes, according to police.
Police say that before clearing the report it was found that the box of cigarettes was worth $2,992. With the public’s help, New Hartford police were able to identify Pajazetovic as the suspect.
Pajazetovic was arrested on October 5 and charged with the following:
- Third-degree robbery (Felony)
- Third-degree burglary (Felony)
- Fourth-degree grand larceny (Felony)
- Second-degree harassment (Violation)
Pajazetovic was arraigned in New Hartford court and sent to the Oneida County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or bond. He’s scheduled to return to court at a later date.
