UPDATE: Eight cars were damaged by a fire at Carbone Subaru of Utica Monday morning, and fire officials say they may not be able to determine a cause.
The fire broke out in a back lot of the dealership, located at 5036 Commercial Drive in Yorkville, around 2:30 a.m. Monday. It was reported by two people who live in the area when they heard what they thought were explosions and called 911.
Officials say the fire started in one car and then spread to two others, which were completely destroyed. The Yorkville fire chief says five other cars were damaged and may be able to be repaired. The cars damaged by the fire were all used vehicles or trade-ins.
The Yorkville fire chief says he’s unsure if they’ll be able to determine a cause of the fire due to the extent of the damage.
Carbone Suburu General Manager Rick Zuccaro says he is thankful the Yorkville volunteer firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other vehicles, "They were here immediately, they were amazing. Three cars don't just catch on fire by themselves at 2:30 in the morning. We're just really glad that no one was hurt, that's the main thing. Like I said, cars don't just catch on fire by themselves, but we're very excited about our new dealership and we're glad that no one got hurt in this situation, but they were three older cars that we had taken in on trade that were probably going to be wholesaled anyway, so at least it was that kind of situation."
