UTICA, N.Y. – Five new recruits are heading to the Utica police academy next week, but were officially sworn in on Friday at Utica City Hall.
Matthew Cross, Myles Felton, Leby Gonzalez, Allen Islamagic and Benjamin Vanderpool were welcomed to the force by Mayor Robert Palmieri and Police Chief Mark Williams during the ceremony.
Williams says being a police officer is more than just a job.
“I always say police is truly a calling, it’s not a job, it’s certainly a career. Any young men and women who wants to get into this profession, you truly have to be dedicated and really want to help people and want to improve your community.”
The five were chosen out of 200 candidates.
The recruits will begin 26 weeks of academy training on Monday, followed by 12 weeks of field training.
