DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. - Dozens of concerned parents, teachers, and tax payers attended a special Board of Education meeting at Dolgeville Central School to get answers about the proposed 2019-20 budget.

The district is facing a $2.6 million deficit and the budget proposed an 11% tax increase.

Wednesday night, the district business manager, Jessica Radley, and the district superintendent, Lynn Rhone, presented the budget. They answered specific questions and addressed some concerns about the proposed budget. According to the district, the deficit was due to additional expenses such as the purchase of air conditioners for a special needs student, three new positions in the district, and mistakes in previous budget calculations for health insurance and revenue. Rhone says also setting the district back was never recieving grant money for the Pre-K program.

Rhone says part of the solution is asking tax payers to approve an 11% tax increase and decrease expenses for this year.

According to the district, there will be teaching positions cut, along with the Pre-K program, some elective classes for students, and minor cuts to some sports programs. The number of staff cuts are still unknown, but the board estimates at least 11 positions.

Parents are concerned with these cuts and the tax increase.

"My concern is them basically getting rid of the teachers that we need or the activities, pretty much anything that could destroy our school," Nicole Palmeter, a parent at Dolgeville said. "It becomes an issue because if we vote it down, then how many teachers are going to lose their jobs and what are their families going to do so it's a flip coin."

A public hearing on the proposed budget will be on May 14 and the budget vote will be on May 21.
