DEERFIELD, N.Y. -- Two people are dead following a shooting in Deerfield Tuesday, on at 6110 Walker Road. State police have the homeowner in custody.

It was first reported as a home invasion on Walker Road shortly before 3 p.m., but authorities confirmed there was no intruder.

State police say that a man and woman have died -- the woman was killed at the scene and the male victim died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

"He was able to get out, run to a neighbor across the street," Jack Keller, NYS Police said. "They were able to assist him, get him to St. E's as quick as possible. Unfortunately, he passed away at the hospital."

The homeowner has been taken into custody, but no charges have been filed at this point.

It is unclear what the circumstances were leading up to the shooting, or what the relationship was between the victims and the homeowner.

"We're just trying to determine who these people were and exactly why they were inside the house," Keller said.

Students at the Deerfield Elementary School were kept at school after a lockout/hold-in-place was issued due to the police activity in the area, but that was lifted a little before 5 p.m.

Police say this does appear to be an isolated incident and they are looking to speak to anyone with information.

"There's, we believe, no danger to the public at this time," Keller said. "We're still trying to piece together the whole timeline before the shooting and hopefully we're going to get some more information and we're asking if anybody does know any information certainly, people who may have passed by just before the shooting or lives in the area who has video, certainly we would like to hear from them."

WKTV will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
