UTICA - More than 1,000 signatures have been collected in an attempt to reverse a term limits law in Utica.

It started with a vote last Fall, when Utica Common Council members voted to extend term limits for elected officials. That means city government officials can now serve for up to 12 years.

Lou Critelli is a former councilman, who served on the Common Council in the 1970s and 80s. He says before 1992 there was no limit on how much time elected officials could serve. With his help, the public was given a chance to vote on an eight-year term limit for elected officials.

"At that time, I didn't have a lot of help,” Critelli said. “But we had enough signatures to get it on the ballot. So, 67 percent of the people who voted, voted for term limits. And five councilmen change that?”

At 92-years-old, Critelli started this new petition to challenge the 12-year term limit law.

"The people are angry, they're darn angry. The fact that they voted that issue without them having the say."

With over 1,000 signatures, Critelli hopes that people can have their voices heard.

"I’m hoping that people get that chance to see their hopes realized. I really hope that, and they deserve it."

The petition is the first step in bringing it to a vote. If the Common Council doesn't take action on the petition, another 500 signatures will be needed by September 7th in order to put the topic on the ballot for the public to decide.
