BOONVILLE, NY – Members of the Boonville community said thank you to first responders Sunday, following January’s devastating fire that destroyed numerous homes and businesses along Main Street.

The Boonville Elks, along with the Boonville American Legion, recognized the 13 fire departments and various law enforcement agencies that responded to the fire with a special spaghetti dinner at the Boonville Elks Lodge 2158.

The January, 7 fire displaced 15 people and destroyed five buildings.

Edward Kurish, who helped organize the event, said quick action by those first on the scene made it possible for everyone to make it of their homes safely.

“When the fire was first reported, 4 first responders -2 troopers, a Boonville police officer, and an EMT - along with 2 civilians, were able to evacuate the 15 residences before any firemen arrived on the scene.”

Those individuals – Boonville Police Officer Brittany Pohoresky, NY State Troopers Meagan Hartmann and David Lyubezhanin, Boonville Fire Department EMT Eric Stempien, and civilians Shawn Sasenbury and Tyler Sturtevant – were recognized with special certificates from various agencies for their heroic efforts.
