A local animal shelter outlines plans for state funding

The president of Herkimer County Humane Society discussed their plans for state funding, which totals half a million dollars.

The president of Herkimer County Humane Society discussed their plans for state funding, which totals half a million dollars.


The shelter will use the money to renovate animal rooms. They also plan to install new heating and cooling.


President of Board of Directors Dana Guidera says the money is important because it will help Herkimer County Humane Society further their mission to help animals in need.


"I think one of the things that's important that we do here in Herkimer, that I’m really proud of is that if somebody's struggling to keep their animal in their home or their living situation changes, we keep our doors open to everybody,” Guidera said. “And if there's an animal in need, it doesn't matter where it is, we'll help out and we'll open our doors."


The Herkimer County Humane Society, The Humane Society of Rome, and the Susquehanna SPCA in Cooperstown will receive the funding.


The money is a part of a five-million dollar grant from the Companion Animal Capital Fund. The goal of the grant is to improve animal care and health.


The Humane Society of Rome will use the money to build a new shelter. They're currently located in an old house. The new facility will hold more animals and will include a new ventilation system.


The Susquehanna SPCA will also build a new shelter. The facility has dealt with flooding issues in the past. Crews spent days cleaning up water that seeped into the shelter due to heavy rains and flooding from a nearby creek.

The new facility will be built on land that will help decrease the risk for flooding.

These shelters are just three of 14 across the state that will receive state funding.
