COLUMBIA, NY – Saturday was National Train Day, although thanks to Mother Nature, it felt more like National Rain Day.
That didn’t stop the folks at the new Lackawanna Trail Park, located on McKoons Road in the town of Columbia, from celebrating though. They opened the rustic grass-covered walking trails to visitors and even had train rides to take passengers part of the way along an old railroad bed.
There were also steam engine demonstrations and other railroad relics on display.
The park is privately owned with 4.5 miles of hiking trails for visitors to enjoy.
Owner Ben Gottfried says the park is a work in progress and right now they’re just trying to gauge public interest.
