UTICA – An Oneida County man who served prison time for killing a baby with a shotgun in 2015 has been sentenced for raping a pre-teen girl.

22-year-old Henry Bartle of Annsville was sentenced to seven years in prison and ten years post-release supervision after pleading guilty to raping a 12-year-old girl in the Village of Sylvan Beach in June of 2019.

Emotions were high as letters from the victim and the victim's father were read in Oneida County Court Wednesday morning.

The victim, now 13, says Bartle had sex with her on at least three occasions. She said she contracted a sexually transmitted disease from Bartle.

The victim detailed in her letter just some of what the rape has cost her, including her relationship with her mother - who was romantically involved with Bartle.

Her father wants to ensure Bartle stays away from his daughter when he gets out of jail.

“I could tell there was something wrong with her, but he had so thoroughly brainwashed her that she didn’t want to tell anybody what was going on. He went on to sexually assault her two more times…” said Steve Feiner, Oneida County Assistant District Attorney, reading the letter from the victim’s father in open court.

Judge Robert Bauer, who heard the case, had pointed remarks for Bartle during the sentencing hearing.

“One common thread through your life - and the harm you've caused others – seems to be marijuana use. Perhaps you should cut that out of your life. If you look back and consider the horrific grievous harm caused the last time you used marijuana…” said Bauer.

The judge was referring to November 2015, when Bartle shot and killed his girlfriend's seven-month-old baby while cleaning a shotgun. He was 18-years-old at the time and was granted youthful offender status. Bartle was sentenced to 1.3 to 4 years in state prison after a guilty plea to second-degree manslaughter. He told police he was smoking marijuana when the gun accidentally went off and shot the baby, Nathaniel Hitt of Rome.
