MARCY, N.Y. - 12 North Sports Bar in Marcy is starting their axe throwing league to give people something fun to do this summer.
Many local businesses are struggling to find creative ways to bring customers back to their establishments, especially with the new restrictions.
Outdoor axe throwing is an activity you can do wearing a mask while social distancing.
Karen Martin and her husband own 12 North Sports Bar.
“It's been a little hard and difficult to keep things going but we’re trying," Martin said. “It's nice to be able to be outside, people can enjoy a couple drinks or food, hangout with their friends and still be safe.”
12 North Sports Bar hosts sporting leagues every summer from softball, to volleyball, to axe throwing. Martin says she hopes they can get all of their leagues back up and running soon.
“Our leagues, for the summertime, they make our winter, this is where we make our money, this is our bread and butter to get us through the winter so it definitely has hurt business a lot that we haven’t been able to do that," Martin said. “Hopefully as the next phase comes in, we can try to get some more of our other leagues going."
The axe throwing league is hosted by Woodchuckers Axe Throwing based out of Pittsburgh. The owner and operator of the company, Shelly Dutkiewicz, says she was happy to bring axe throwing to the area.
"We were very excited to be here in the Mohawk Valley region in February, we opened up inside at 12 North and now we're using our outdoor mobile units to bring some entertainment outside," Dutkiewicz said.
Dutkiewicz says their summer leagues start July 6. You can sign up or just give it a try.
"You can come out and throw for an hour, just try it, have fun, bring your friends, have a party," Dutkiewicz said. "Until you try it, you don’t know how much fun it is, you have to try it.”
Axe throwers at Wednesday night's event say it's nice to get outside and enjoy time with friends and family.
"It's nice to get out of work and be able to do something like this and enjoy yourself with friends and family," Jake Chitty, one of the throwers at 12 North Sports Bar said. "It's nice to kind of come back to how things were before this whole thing happened and act like everything's normal."
12 North Sports Bar will also be hosting Corn Hole tournaments. You can also find more information on that on their Facebook page.
