HERKIMER – The new Herkimer County Jail is one step closer to being built.
More than a dozen companies placed bids to build the new county jail that will be located at the former P&C site on State Route 28 in Herkimer. There were bids for the general contractor, plumbing, electrical, heating and are conditioning work.
Now, the bids will be reviewed by the architect for the project, who will then make recommendations to Herkimer County legislators next month to award the bids.
Local officials say this will save money in property taxes.
“The fact that within a couple years that we have the facility built – we’ve talked about this from day one, and I've been accused yes or no that it’ll happen – I would think in our third year we'll see our property taxes drop from $700,000 to a million dollars because of the construction of the facility,” said Herkimer County Administrator James Wallace.
Construction on the new facility could begin in November. The project is expected to take about a year and a half to complete.
Officials say it’s still too early to know the final cost of the entire project.
