ALBANY, N.Y. – New legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo allows various businesses to keep Narcan, and other opioid antagonists, on hand to use in the case of an overdose at their establishment.

The measure adds restaurants, bars, malls, beauty salons, theaters, hotels and retail stores to the list of entities that can possess, distribute and administer Narcan when needed, under the Good Samaritan law.

“This expansion of the Good Samaritan law gives additional entities the ability to save the life of an individual suffering from addiction without penalty. New York State will continue to do everything we can to expand access to critical care as we fight this deadly scourge and save lives,” said Cuomo.

Good Samaritan laws provide legal protection to those who assist people who have overdosed, or are otherwise ill or incapacitated.

“By authorizing the use of these reversal drugs without fear of liability, this new law will also provide peace of mind to residents and business owners around the state who are inclined to help those in desperate need of help," said Sen. Pete Harckham, chair of the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.

The law goes into effect immediately.
