ROME, N.Y. – Birnie Bus will no longer provide shuttles to practices and home games for Rome City School District’s student-athletes.
The bus company notified the school about the change on Thursday, and the district made parents aware that students were responsible to get to and from athletic events for the remainder of the season.
Superintendent Peter Blake says this will be a challenge, especially for younger students.
"So, it's a really big unexpected hardship on the families and the athletes. At the high school level, your varsity sports, it's not as big as a deal because you probably have enough students that do drive and can transport themselves and their teammates; but at the modified and JV level it does become an issue because you have to hope you have enough parents who can step up to the plate and transport on short notice,” said Blake.
Blake said Birnie Bus did not provide a reason for discontinuing this service, but will still provide transportation to and from away games.
