WEBB, N.Y. (UPDATED) -- Authorities are investigating a fatal boating accident at the Stillwater Reservoir in Northern Herkimer County that happened on Wednesday, June 24.
Rescue crews were called about two miles out from the Stillwater Boat Launch just after 5 p.m., where they found one person dead and another alive, both floating in the water.
Town of Webb Police Chief Ron Johnston says 69-year-old Jerry R Jennings, of Rome, was found dead at the scene. His brother, 67-year-old Calvin D. Jennings, of Canajoharie, was taken to Lewis County General Hospital to be treated for hypothermia and other minor injuries.
Police believe it was just the two people on board the 14-foot aluminum boat, and both were wearing life jackets.
Johnston says authorities estimate the brothers were in the water for at least two hours before they were found by a fellow boater, who stopped at the scene after coming across a large amount of debris.
Calvin says the boat started to sink while they were on board, and quickly became submerged under water.
Police confirmed the sinking, although it is unclear what caused the boat to go under. Divers tried to search the water Wednesday night, but it was too dark. They resumed the search Thursday morning.
