UPDATE: The teen whose body was found in Canadarago Lake Tuesday morning has been identified as 19-year-old Dustin Groat of Jordanville.
New York State Police say troopers responded at approximately 9:44 p.m. Monday and learned that two teens on separate kayaks had both capsized and one was missing in the water.
Police say Groat and the other teen got into their kayaks at the Canadarago Lake Boat Launch around 7:30 p.m. Monday and paddled to Deowongo Island. As the storm approached, the teens began to paddle back to the boat launch but Groat’s kayak capsized, and he was not wearing a floatation device. Police say the other teen was unable to find Groat but he was able to get back to shore and call for help.
State police and the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office were assisted by the Shuyler Lake Fire Department with their airboat, along with the Richfield Springs, West Exeter, Exeter and Hartwick fire departments.
Police say that due to the storm and choppy lake conditions, the State Police Underwater Recovery Team couldn’t start their recovery efforts until 1 a.m. Groat’s body was recovered around 4:25 a.m. Tuesday in about 23 feet of water.
Police say their investigation into the incident continues.
