Boilermaker president: It’ll take a couple years to get back to the position we were in in 2019

Utica, N.Y. - The day after the Boilermaker Road Race each year, Boilermaker officials hold a post-race press conference.

On this Monday in October, 2021, Boilermaker President Mark Donovan called this year's pandemic-era version of the race a huge success, "Every year as we work through the afterglow, there's typically so much to be proud of and thankful for. This year that's so much more poignant as it was over 800 days between the last time we gathered here. It's been far too long and been far too hard for so many people. Personally, I couldn't be more proud of the effort and resolve with this Boilermaker team, the staff, brought to bear every day throughout this, in the face of a once in a century pandemic that really threatened the sustainability of this organization quite honestly. And all throughout, enduring ignorant vitriol from the local minority, slamming the decisions we made, completely with the public health and safety of our community in mind. Very disheartening, but we powered through it and we delivered yesterday."

Donovan also touched on the fact that the past 19 months of Covid-19 have taken quite a financial toll on the Boilermaker organization, "Obviously last year was a horrific financial year for us. This year won’t be a great one but we’re moving in the right direction and I think if we can get the world together, we need normal on so many levels, and we’re no different, so we need to get back to normal and it’ll take us a couple years to get back to the position we were in in 2019."

Donovan did not touch on any kind of dollar figures the pandemic may have cost the Boilermaker.

Looking back, the 2021 Boilermaker is now the coldest Boilermaker of all time.

Boilermaker Race Director Jim Stasaitis says it was 55 degrees at race time. He says the previous record was 58 degrees in 1984.

Stasaitis says this year also saw the smallest field in a long time, "In the 15K we had 3,480 finishers. In the 5K, 1,114 for a total of 4594. Just basically on par with the number of finishers we had a 1994, 1995."

Boilermaker 2022 is now just 272 days away and Donovan says the biggest obstacle, not knowing how big of a race it will be once again.

When asked if it would be harder to prepare for next year's race having only 9 months instead of a full year, Donovan said the following, "The biggest challenge quite honestly standing here today, and the crime of everything is, we don't know what that's gonna look like. Whether we have 12 months or 8 months or 6 months, if we're in the same situation, that will be horrible, that'll be horrible not only for us, but for all of us."
