UTICA – On Thursday morning, Broadway Utica announced what they believe to be the biggest show to ever grace the Stanley Theater stage.
When the production wraps up in New York City in late September, Hello, Dolly! will be fresh off Broadway and heading to Utica. Hello, Dolly! is a 1964 musical that follows the story of Dolly Gallagher Levi as she travels to Yonkers, New York to find a partner for “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder.
Tony Award-winning actress Betty Buckley, who you may remember as stepmom Abby Bradford from the TV show Eight is Enough, will be cast in the role of Dolly.
It’s world-class entertainment, much-needed employment as intricate sets will need to be built, and it’ll be about a month-long cash infusion for the city of Utica as 100 people or so will be coming along with the production, and they will have to eat, drink, gas up and shop in the local area.
“This allows everybody to experience a Broadway show that they may not get to see otherwise,” said Derek Clark, executive director of Broadway Utica.
“For Utica to be able to see a show of this caliber, with this much star power here in Utica, is so exciting,” Clark said.
Utica is the first stop on the show’s national tour, and they’ll perform at the Stanley Theater on Sept. 25-26.
