ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A first-time camper program at New York parks is being expanded this year after the success of last year's pilot program.

The Department of Environmental Conservation and Office of Parks and Recreation are providing all the gear necessary for 65 families to try out camping at campgrounds around the state.

That includes a six-person tent, sleeping bags, camp chairs, lanterns and firewood. There will also be campground guides to help set up camp and participate in outdoor activities.

First-time camper weekends are scheduled at 13 state-run campgrounds on weekends in July and August.

Applications will be taken online May 10-13 and participants will be randomly selected through a lottery to fill the available slots.
