A boating accident has claimed the life of Jordanville teenager Dustin N. Groat.

Nineteen year old Dustin N. Groat was out kayaking with a friend on Canadarago Lake Monday evening around 7:30. The two teenagers were headed back to the boat launch when one kayak overturned. Groat’s friend tried to help save his friend when his kayak capsized as well. He was able to swim back to shore and call 9-1-1.

While State Police are still investigating what may have caused the kayak to turn over, weather may have played a role in the accident.
State Police Troop C Captain Scott Heggelke tells us the waters were so rough, the search had to be calle off for a while.

"Some storms did come through last night, so it got a little rough out there. State Police divers showed up and they had to suspend the search for a short period of time, and then this morning about 4:45 State Police Divers located Dustin in about 23 foot of water, a couple hundred yards west of the island."

State Police say Dustin Groat was not wearing a floatation device.

Richfield Springs High School Principal tells us they are providing grief counseling for students and former graduates.
