WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (UPDATED) -- The Oneida County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fiery one-vehicle crash that happened in Westmoreland on Monday evening.
The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on Route 5. Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol says Jack Pylman, 73, of Utica, was driving a pickup truck westbound when he went off the road, hitting a utility pole head-on. The truck rolled over and caught on fire.
Maciol says Pylman sustained severe burns to his face and upper torso. He was first taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, but later transferred to Upstate Medical in Syracuse due to the severity of his injuries.
Bystanders helped Pylman out of his vehicle following the crash. State Route 5 was temporarily shut down for the investigation process. National Grid was also on scene as power in the area went out due to the crash.
