EXETER, N.Y. - The former owner of Zoe, the German shepherd who chewed off her own leg, appeared in Exeter Town Court.
59-year-old Carl Pritchard was supposed to be arraigned Wednesday night, but the judge tells News Channel 2 that he recused himself from the case.
Judge Stephen Meyer says he used to be a state trooper, and he had numerous amounts of professional contact with Pritchard. He says once he read the case and recognized the defendant, he says there was a conflict of interest.
Judge Meyer says the case will go to DA's office and go to a county judge who will then reassign it to another court. He said due to the holidays, that will most likely be in four to six weeks.
Pritchard is charged with overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, and- failure to provide proper sustenance.
