UTICA, N.Y. – The City of Utica has taken precautions to help deter mass gatherings at public parks by banning use of playgrounds, fields and basketball courts.
After people were still seen still playing basketball last week, the city has now covered the hoops.
"Unfortunately, on Thursday March 26, many kids ignored the signage and several basketball courts were utilized. The public made city officials aware of what occurred through social media," said Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri. "Once I was made aware of this, I immediately directed the Department of Public Works to cover all basketball rims in the city to deter this irresponsible behavior."
The City of Rome has put out similar orders, prohibiting use of park equipment and sports courts and fields throughout the city.
