CLINTON, NY – A local high school coach has been reinstated, less than a week after his suspension sparked an outcry of support among the community.

Monday night the Clinton school board held a special meeting, in which they discussed the employment status of indoor track coach Norman Deep. Deep had been on paid administrative leave since the board’s last regular meeting on November 16, pending the results of an investigation. At that meeting the board added a late item to the agenda stating Deep had been “placed on paid administrative leave from the duties of coach of the Indoor Track Team for the 2021-2022 season, until further notice.”

When reached for clarification on why Deep had been placed on leave, district superintendent Steve Grimm declined to specify, citing confidentiality for personnel matters.

However, Grimm published a letter to the community on the district’s website addressing the issue, saying in part “I understand that there are many people upset with the placement of our Indoor Track Coach on paid administrative leave until further notice. In addition to shock and disappointment, many who have sent us communication want more information about why, are concerned about the board acting in secrecy, and allude to the idea of vindictive action against the coach. While I have been advised to respond with a simple “We cannot comment on personnel matters”, I know that the significance of this action and impact on our students, parents (present and former) require as much communication as I am legally able.”

At Monday night’s meeting, the board voted unanimously to reinstate Deep to his position as indoor track coach. The brief public portion of that meeting was posted to YouTube. Again, no mention was made publicly as to why Deep was suspended in the first place.

Several students and parents had reached out to NewsChannel 2 sharing their concerns over the situation. A group of high school students walked out of class last week as a show of support for the coach.

Deep is also a teacher at Clinton High School. His status as a teacher was unchanged during his leave from coaching.
