Rome, N.Y. - The Utica Comets and Syracuse Crunch announced, Friday, that the Empire State Classic outdoor game set to take place in Rome next month has been postponed.
The Comets said in a statement that the decision was made due to the current state guidelines amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The game was intended to be played on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Griffiss Business & Technology Park, formerly Griffiss Air Force Base.
It was supposed to be considered a "weekend winter festival" that would include multiple events on the Griffiss campus including games played by both the Utica College men's and women's ice hockey teams.
While not taking place this season, the current intention is to hold it later in the calendar year, during the 2021-22 season.
"While we are saddened to have to postpone the event, we are equally excited to start planning for the new date in 2021 while ensuring that the safety of our fans is the top priority," the Comets said via its social media pages.
Tickets purchased will still be honored when the event is held later in the calendar year. However, ticketholders are entitled to a refund, should they choose with a request submitted by Feb. 1.
The Comets are set to participate in a shortened 2020-21 season that begins on Feb. 5. A schedule has yet to be announced.
Utica will begin the season with no fans in attendance at the Adirondack Bank Center for its games.
