Utica, N.Y. - The Utica Comets announce the 2019-20 preseason training camp roster, Monday, with 17 forwards, 11 defensemen and three goalies to take the ice at the Adirondack Bank Center for the next couple of weeks.
The initial roster includes 15 players who appeared in a game for the Comets last season, including captain Carter Bancks, leading scorer Reid Boucher and goalie Richard Bachman, who returns after suffering a torn Achilles that ended his season in December.
They'll also get back promising defensive prospect Olli Juolevi who, himself, was sidelined for the season after a December knee surgery.
Veteran forward Wacey Hamilton returns with hopes of being able to stay healthy after only appearing in 23 games due to various injuries last season. He's been an alternate captain for Utica for the past four seasons, providing valuable leadership and depth to the club on and off the ice.
Along with Bachman, Michael DiPietro and Zane McIntyre join the rotation between the pipes.
DiPietro is a highly-touted prospect, selected 64th overall (3rd round) by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2017 NHL Draft. This will be his first full season as a pro after spending the past four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League junior ranks with the Winsor Spitfires and Ottawa 67's.
McIntyre is a 27-year-old goaltender who has appeared in 155 AHL regular season games with the Providence Bruins, and eight NHL regular season games with the Boston Bruins.
There is a unique local presence in training camp this year for the Comets as the team has invited four players on professional tryouts, one of which being Clinton native Gregg Burmaster.
Burmaster spent the past two seasons playing NCAA Division III hockey right at The Aud for Utica College, where he was the Pioneers team's captain in 2018-19, as well as, their leading scorer with 46 points.
Following the collegiate hockey season, Burmaster debuted as a pro with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL, where he played four games.
He is under contract with the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals this season should he not remain with the Comets.
More players are expected to join the Comets in the coming days as the Canucks need to reduce their roster to 23 players by opening night on October 2.
