Syracuse, N.Y. - The Utica Comets were able to chip back from down three and bring it to a one-goal game, but couldn't find the equalizer as they fell to the Syracuse Crunch 4-2 at Upstate Medical University Arena, Monday.
It was the fifth meeting of the Galaxy Cup series this year with Utica now holding a 3-2 series edge.
After a scoreless first period, Syracuse came out in the second and scored two, one from Boris Katchouk on a one-timer feed from Alex Barre-Boulet. Then Alexander Volkov got a back door pass from Gemel Smith after the Crunch came on on Zane McIntyre 3-on-0.
In the third, Barre-Boulet put a wrist shot in to expand the lead to 3-0 Syracuse.
The Comets finally got on the board just over two minutes later with Jonah Gadjovich tipping a centering feed from Josh Teves over the line for his tenth of the season. Carter Banks had the secondary assist on the goal.
A few minutes later, Reid Boucher scored his 24th of the year, a power play goal off assists from Justin Bailey and Olli Juolevi.
The Comets mounted a furious attack as they attempted to complete the comeback, but Smith put in an empty net goal with 56 seconds remaining to ice it.
Utica is back at home on Wednesday as they face the Binghamton Devils. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
