ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Utica Comets opened up the 2020-21 season 331 days after playing its last regular season game, capping off the exciting night with a 3-2 win over the Rochester Americans, Friday.
Two goals by Kole Lind and 27 saves from Jon Gillies helped lead comets to the big opening night win.
After Gillies was forced to make a few key saves early on, the Comets started to come alive.
Nearly midway through the first period, Lind fired a one-timer off a feed from Sven Baertschi passed Amerks goalie Dustin Tokarski, for his first of the night and the first goal of the year for Utica to give them the lead. Sam Anas also assisted on the play.
Patrick McGrath evened the score for the Amerks with 26 seconds remaining in the first period with assists from Dominic Franco and Mattias Samuelsson.
The Comets grabbed the lead again 9:25 into the second period with Jonah Gadjovich scoring off a feed from Lukas Jasek behind the net.
Lind notched his second of the night 6:55 into the third on the power play with a beautiful cross-ice feed from Sam Anas.
Arttu Ruotsalainen brought the Amerks back within with 8:53 in, but Utica was able to hang on the rest of the way.
It's the second straight opening night win for the Comets.
The team returns to action on Saturday night in Syracuse in the first of 14 Galaxy Cup match-ups with the Syracuse Crunch. Puck drop is at 7:05 p.m.
