UTICA, N.Y. --- Congressman Anthony Brindisi Introduced a bill to increase mental healthcare options for farmers.
The Democrats said that the current rate of suicide is 45 percent higher than in urban areas. Republican Congressman John Katko is also a sponsor of the bill.
If approved, the legislation would implement stress management training with the USDA. The legislation would also create public service announcements to increase awareness.
"Our Bill will address people at the USDA who work with farmers to empower them with the tools they need to help identify stress-reduction tactics and empower them to work with local agencies to get farmers and individuals living in rural areas the help they need," said Brindisi.
The bill is currently in committee and has not yet been scheduled for a House vote.
