COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – There is a tie for the second trustee seat in the village of Cooperstown after Tuesday night’s elections, and the Otsego County Board of Elections will have to recount the votes.
Three candidates were running for the two trustee seats this election. Incumbent Joe Membrino received the most votes with 287, unofficially winning the first seat.
The two other candidates, MacGuire Benton and Mary Margaret Robbins, both received 272 votes.
If the votes are still tied after the recount, a judge will decide to either hold a runoff election, or draw lots, which means the winner will be randomly selected.
The village has not yet set a date for the recount.
