ROME, NY – Members of the Rome Police Department were at a different kind of court Saturday evening.

The basketball court.

They took on coaches from the Rome City School District at RFA high school in a Cops versus Coaches basketball game that benefits Rome PD’s “Shop with a Cop” program.

Not only does the program help provide a Merry Christmas for less fortunate youth in the Rome area, but according to Rome PD Officer Nick Martin who helped organize the game, it also helps them see the police officers in a different light.

“The kids get to meet us and walk around with us and the parents are usually with them. They get to know us and see that maybe if they had a bad idea about us before, they realize that it’s not so bad or terrifying to talk to a police officer, and they can approach us any time.”

This year’s game was a nail biter.

Officer Charles Zonneyville made a last second 3 pointer in overtime from the other end of the court, but it wasn’t enough as the coaches outlasted the cops 80 to 89.

A great game for a great cause.
