MARCY, N.Y. (UPDATED) – Two separate accidents occurred on Route 49 in Marcy Friday morning, one in the eastbound lane and one in the westbound lane.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, 25-year-old Derrick Bien-Aime, of Utica, fell asleep at the wheel while driving eastbound around 7:30 a.m., causing his BMW to veer off of the road, hit an embankment and go airborne before coming to a stop and catching fire.
Bien-Aime was not injured in the crash, but his passenger, 27-year-old Shai A. McBride, of Utica, was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center to be treated for significant hip and rib injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
Maciol said Bien-Aime was issued tickets for multiple vehicle and traffic violations, and will return to Marcy Town Court at a later date.
The car heading east crashed into a flatbead, according to officials, smashing the front end and detaching part of the roof from the frame.
One person was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Traffic was slow in the area for a period of time after emergency vehicles responded and crews worked to clear the scene.
All lanes in both directions have since reopened.
